Acceptance of Walking Stick by Patients Suffering Visual Disabilities

Introduction: Visual impairment is a health problem with a significant social impact, closely linked to population aging and the social determinants of health. Globally, it is one of the leading causes of functional limitations, most of which are preventable or treatable. Low vision and blindness affect autonomy, mobility, and quality of life, making early detection, timely treatment, and the implementation of rehabilitation strategies that promote independence and social inclusion essential.
Objective: To identify cane acceptance among patients with visual impairments.
Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample consisted of people with visual impairments seen in the low vision clinic at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology from February to May 2025. The study sample consisted of 42 patients.
Results: In the study, 30 patients were male (71 %) and 12 were female (28 %), while 52 % of patients were in the 60 and older age group. The majority of patients (57 %) showed acceptance of the cane; of these, 38 % (16 patients) were older than 60 years, while 22 % did not accept the cane, either due to prejudice or because it was considered unnecessary.
Conclusions: Male patients and those 60 and older predominate. The majority of patients who accept the use of a cane are from this age group. The most frequent reasons for not accepting its use are the lack of knowledge of its use for orientation and mobility in daily life.
