Music Therapy Applied to Cataract Surgery

Music therapy is the treatment performed through the use of music or musical elements such as sound, rhythm, melody and harmony. Among the interventions with music, there is also "music in medicine", which is nothing more than listening to pre-recorded music before, during and after medical or surgical interventions. Undergoing surgery is a stressful factor, generating anxiety and fear, which produces physiological changes such as hypertension and tachycardia. Cataract surgery can be particularly stressful, the incorporation of music for lens extraction can decrease anxiety, increase motivation, control, control blood pressure, heart rate and can make it satisfactory. Studies show that its application is a very effective non-pharmacological and economical option for a better self-acceptance of their situation, positive relationships with their peers in the intervention group, personal growth, a purpose in life and, therefore, a better quality of life.
