Abstract

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of ACRIOL 128 phakic lens implantation for the correction of high myopia and visual quality at three years of follow-up.

Methods: A prospective longitudinal descriptive study was performed, with three years of follow-up with 49 patients (91 eyes) with myopia corrected with ACR-128 phakic lens. Effectiveness and visual quality were determined through the following variables: uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, pre and postoperatively.

Results: Uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity improved with significant differences (p < 0.01) between pre- and postoperative. The effectiveness index at three months after surgery was 0.77 in the right eye and 0.70 in the left eye, at 12 months it was 0.80 in the right eye and 0.71 in the left eye, while at three years it was 0.77 in the right eye and 0.67 in the left eye. There was increased contrast sensitivity at different spatial frequencies.

Conclusions: ACRIOL 128 phakic lens implantation is an effective technique as it improves uncorrected and better corrected visual acuity that remains stable; as well as the visual quality of patients demonstrated with increased contrast sensitivity at different spatial frequencies after surgery.
