Abstract

Operation Miracle is an international program of free ophthalmologic care that since 2005 has improved the quality of life of thousands of Argentines. Thanks to the collaboration between Cuba and Argentina, this program has allowed access to visual surgery for low-income people, reducing avoidable blindness in vulnerable communities. Through the Dr. Ernesto Che Guevara Ophthalmology Center in Cordoba, the program has not only restored the sight of numerous patients, but also provided specialized training for eye care professionals, generating a lasting impact on ophthalmologic medical care and health equity. In addition to its contribution to eye health, Operation Miracle has contributed to reducing inequalities in access to health services in Argentina and has fostered greater awareness and community participation in eye health. The article analyzes the achievements and challenges faced by Operation Miracle in Argentina, as well as its contribution to the construction of an accessible eye health system and its role as an example of international cooperation and social justice. Finally, it discusses the current challenges and prospects for sustainability of the program, whose impact and legacy are fundamental for the strengthening of eye health in Argentina and in other regions with similar contexts.
