Micropulsed Laser in Macular Edema associated with Retinal Venous Occlusions
Keywords:

Objective: To describe the anatomic and functional results of micropulsed laser treatment in patients with macular edema associated with retinal venous occlusions.
Methods: A descriptive, longitudinal study was performed at the Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology Ramón Pando Ferrer between January and May 2022. The non-probabilistic and convenience sample consisted of 56 eyes of 48 patients. The variables studied were age, sex, skin color; clinical variables such as systemic and ocular pathologic history, laterality, type of venous occlusion according to anatomic and angiographic classification; central macular thickness, total macular volume, best corrected visual acuity.
Results: The average age was 66.1 ± 10.8 (49-86) years. Of the study participants, 56.3 % were female and 79.2 % were of white skin color. Regarding personal pathological history, 22.9 % suffered from glaucoma and 81.3 % from arterial hypertension. There was predominance in right eye (56.3 %); central retinal vein occlusion (62.5 %) and ischemic form (77.1 %).
Conclusions: Anatomical and functional results were better postoperatively. Micropulsed laser constitutes a second-line treatment alternative, associated to the use of intravitreal antiangiogenic therapy, for the improvement or resolution of macular edema due to retinal venous occlusion; and one of the main benefits of the use of micropulsed laser therapy is given by the low frequency of complications it produces.
