Cultural Care in the International Medical Assistance Service of the Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology Ramón Pando Ferrer

Objective: To identify gaps in cultural care in the International Medical Assistance Service of the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology.
Methods: A mixed study was carried out with an explanatory sequential strategy. We worked with two populations, population 1 was made up of 603 admitted patients and the second population was made up of 17 nurses directly related to care in the International Medical Assistance service of the Ramón Pando Ferrer Institute.
Results: During the study period, a total of 603 patients were received in the hospital area of the International Medical Assistance service; the years with the highest number of patients were 2015, 2019 and 2018, respectively. The main gaps in nursing care were related to the communication dimension represented in the category identified by the study subjects as language proficiency, other categories that emerged in the research process are culture, habits and lifestyles.
Conclusions: In order to achieve excellent nursing care to the hospitalized patient in the International Medical Assistance service, the transcultural approach should be incorporated as a work strategy in the care management process for the ophthalmology specialty.
