Abstract

Scleral buckling surgery was for a long time the treatment par excellence for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Although interest in performing it has decreased nowadays, it is still in use. Four patients operated for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment at the Villa Clara Ophthalmologic Center are presented, with the aim of describing some advantages offered by scleral buckling surgery in specific situations. In uncomplicated, shallow and slowly progressive inferior retinal rhegmatogenous detachments, developed as a consequence of atrophic holes or retinal dialysis, particularly in young, phakic and myopic patients, without posterior vitreous detachment, scleral buckling surgery is preferred as the first treatment option. In these situations, good anatomical and functional results are achieved with less associated morbidity, in addition to an earlier social and labor reinsertion.
