Abstract

Objective: to identify the association between demographic and clinical variables with the five-year hypotensive outcome of needle revision and mitomycin C in encapsulated filtration blebs.

Methods: Prospective longitudinal descriptive study in 30 patients who underwent revision with needles and mitomycin C. Age, sex and skin color were identified, as well as intraocular pressure, number of eyes drops in the preoperative period, at one month, three months, a one year and five years postoperatively. The association between the variables was also determined

Results: The intraocular pressure at one month was lower compared to preoperative (p = 2.9x10-22); from one year on it increased up to five years, (22 ± 3 mmHg; p1-5years = 0.0016). There was an association between young, female and white skin color patients with postoperative intraocular pressure. Not so with the time after the trabeculectomy was performed.

Conclusions: Revision with a needle and mitomycin C reduces intraocular pressure up to five years postoperatively, but its effect decreases over time. Young, female, and white patients have a greater chance of reducing intraocular pressure. The time after the trabeculectomy was performed does not influence the final result.
