Epidemic and clinical characteristics of patients suffering from ocular adnexal trauma

Objective: To describe the epidemic and clinical characteristics of patients suffering from ocular adnexal trauma.
Methods: A descriptive, longitudinal, retrospective study was carried out with 93 patients complaining of ocular adnexal trauma, admitted to the "Ramón Pando Ferrer" Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology who met the inclusion criteria, from January 2017 to December 2022.
Results: The age average of the study group was of 38, 1 ± 23, 9 years, with a male predominance, household activities were the most common, and metal was the material more frequently associated with ocular adnexal damage. In the Birmingham trauma classification, the highest rates were for blunt trauma, and blunt trauma was the most common. The most frequently affected ocular adnexal was the eyelid, and wounds were most frequently on the eyelids and conjunctiva. Dressing and primary closure of the conjunctiva were the most frequently used procedures.
Conclusions: Eyelid wounds constituted the largest group of those admitted for adnexal trauma. They presented no complications and improved satisfactorily after the treatment.
