Abstract

Objective: To describe the possible relationship between demographic variables and the morphometric characteristics of the cornea in adults without corneal alterations.

Methods: An observational descriptive longitudinal retrospective study was conducted with apparently healthy patients. The sample consisted of 120 patients (240 eyes) treated in the Cornea department of the Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology 'Ramón Pando Ferrer' between 2019 and 2022. The examined variables included demographic data, refractive status, curvature parameters, elevations, and pachymetry.

Results: Statistically significant differences were evident in the variables according to age groups: keratometry in the flatter and more curved axes both anteriorly and posteriorly, in central, apex, and thinnest point pachymetries, and in the anterior elevation of the apex and thinnest point. Between the sexes, only keratometry in the flatter axis and posterior elevation of the apex showed differences. According to skin color, significant differences were evidenced: posterior keratometry in the flattest and steepest axes, central pachymetry, at the apex and at the thinnest point, and according to refractive status, anterior keratometry in the flattest and steepest axes and posterior keratometry in the steepest axis, posterior elevation at the thinnest point and central pachymetry.

Conclusions: It was concluded that there is a relationship between the studied morphometric variables and age, sex, skin color and refractive status.
