Abstract

Objective: Characterize the stages of the learning curve, based on the perceptions of instructors and residents at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology in 2025.

Methods: An anonymous interview was conducted with professors, instructors, and second- and third-year ophthalmology residents from the same training program. The focus was on understanding their experiences and perceptions. Data collection took place in a single day, and the study design was a cross-sectional qualitative study.

Results: The learning curve during residency follows a defined pattern, where paracentesis and intraocular lens implantation are perceived as easy steps, while capsulorhexis and nuclear fracture and emulsification maneuvers are identified as the most difficult. This practical difficulty contrasts with a good theoretical knowledge of the instruments and technique, although there is a clear deficiency in phacodynamics and in the ability to resolve complications. Finally, learning is severely limited by logistical barriers.

Conclusions: To optimize the phacoemulsification learning curve, the determining factor for success lies in the institution's ability to provide a consistent, supervised, and adequately resourced training environment.
