Abstract

Objective: Determine the corneal refractive and tomographic characteristics in patients with myopic ametropia who are candidates for laser refractive surgery.

Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out, which included 108 patients with myopic ametropia (216 eyes), treated in the Refractive Surgery clinic of the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology, with the use of the Pentacam HR.

Results: Women predominated with a mean age of 25.9± 4.8 years, with compound myopic astigmatism in 90% of the eyes. The mean spherical equivalent was -4.37 ± 1.99 diopters in the right eye (OD) and -4.19 ± 1.87 diopters in the left eye (OI), an average axial length of 24.63 ± 0.96 mm (OD) and 24.51 ± 0.92 mm (OI). The anterior and posterior corneal curvature parameters are similar between the different types of myopic ametropia. However, anterior corneal astigmatism was significantly higher in cases of simple myopic astigmatism.

Conclusions: Young adults, female, and with compound myopic astigmatism predominated. Corneal tomographic parameters according to the type of refractive error did not show differences.
