Abstract

Retinal venous occlusion is the second most frequent cause of retinal vascular disease, after diabetic retinopathy, with visual impairment and a high rate of costs due to its complications. Multiple relevant international epidemiological studies estimated a global prevalence of the disease at 28.06 million people in 2015 and an increasing trend in the period 2020-2030 (estimated 2 308 457 for 2020). There is a need to delve deeper into the current trends in the treatment of complications of retinal venous occlusions that partially or totally affect vision. A second review of the scientific literature is performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the use of different therapies, in this case, intravitreal and periocular steroids, as well as laser therapy, as treatment alternatives for retinal venous occlusive disease.
