Abstract

Objective: To determine the epidemiological characteristics of patients who received surgical treatment in the retina service.

Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out on 12,607 patients who underwent surgery in the Retina Service of the Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology "Ramón Pando Ferrer" during the years 2018 and 2019. Demographic variables, surgical techniques in general, indications for pars plana vitrectomy and retinal detachment in particular were identified. The registry book and operative reports of the patients of the institution were used.

Results: Predominated patients aged between 50 and 79 years old (77,2 %), males (53,0 %), from Havana (42,5 %). The most frequent surgical techniques were intravitreal injection of antiagiogenic (43 %), laser treatment of the retina (24,5 %) and pars plana vitrectomy. This latter was indicated predominantly for Retinal detachment (62,4 %).

Conclusions: The most frequent surgical technique was intravitreal injection of Avastin followed by laser photocoagulation and pars plana vitrectomy. Retinal detachment was the most frequent diagnosis, and pars plana vitrectomy was the most common technique performed for its repair.
