Scientific Production on Diabetic Retinopathy in Cuba in the period 2000-2025

Objective: To characterize the scientific production on Diabetic Retinopathy in Cuba from 2000 to 2025.
Method: An observational, descriptive, bibliometric study was conducted on Diabetic Retinopathy using articles published in Cuban medical journals. The universe and sample consisted of 224 articles published during the period. The variables analyzed for each article were: year of publication, number of citations, authors; for the latter, gender, number of articles, and most productive journal. The most cited topics during the study period were also analyzed.
Results: The highest scientific production was in 2020, with 30 articles (13,39 %), and in the five-year period from 2016 to 2020, with 88 articles published (39,29 %). The medical scientific journal with the highest scientific production was the Cuban Journal of Ophthalmology, with 28 articles published (12,50 %). A total of 619 authors published on diabetic retinopathy, with a predominance of female authors (423, representing 68,33 %). Multiple authorship prevailed in the study, with publications by three authors accounting for 39,74 %.
Conclusions: The bibliometric analysis demonstrates that Cuba has developed a robust research capacity in the field of diabetic retinopathy, with the Cuban Journal of Ophthalmology standing out as the leading publication in this field. The evolution from basic epidemiological studies to research on advanced treatments and emerging technologies. However, to maintain and enhance this development, it is crucial to implement strategies that promote scientific publication, interinstitutional collaboration, and the translation of knowledge into clinical practice.
