Abstract

Current trends in societal behavior contribute to an increase in the number of people who develop diabetic retinopathy, many of whom are diagnosed in advanced stages of the disease when the chances of visual recovery are slim. This essay was elaborated with the purpose of reflecting on some of the references provided by science and technology to achieve, through medical-social actions, greater efficacy in the primary prevention of diabetic retinopathy. The role of primary health care in the integration of social entities for the control of risk factors in diabetic patients was taken into account.
