Abstract

Objective: To determine the characteristics of reticular pseudodrusen and their association with age-related maculopathy.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out on patients aged 50 years and over, who attended the Retina Service of the Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology Ramón Pando Ferrer, from April 2009 to April 2022, with a diagnosis of age-related maculopathy, who presented reticular pseudodrusen in the optical coherence tomography examination. The sample consisted of 221 eyes of 113 patients.

Results: The average age was 77.22 ± 7.08 years. Female sex (71.7 %) and bilateral presentation (95.6 %) predominated. Stage III and IV reticular pseudodrusen were the most frequent (59.2 % and 38.2 %), and parafoveal location (68.2 %) and reticular appearance (44.1 %).

Conclusions: Reticular pseudodrusen has a direct relationship with age-related macular degeneration and is increased in the advanced form with neovascular membrane type I and II. Age-related macular degeneration of any variant is associated with stage IV reticular pseudodrusen. Choroidal thinning is associated with the presence of reticular pseudodrusen.
